Airport masterplan predicts huge growth
30.10.08
Prestwick Airport expects to more than double its passenger numbers in the next decade. According to the airport's new 25-year ‘masterplan’, 5.7m passengers will pass through the terminal in 2018 - rising to 12m by 2033. The plan also anticipates that there will be a 4% per year growth in freight handled over the same period.
Mark Rodwell, chief executive of Prestwick Airport, said: ‘We expect to gain a greater share of the Scottish market. Our growth will provide more travel opportunities, deliver more visitors, and create more business opportunities and jobs.'
The plan states that some facilities will need to be upgraded to cope with the growth but the ‘current runway infrastructure will be sufficient to handle the growth’. However, it would need to develop car park and passenger facilities.
