Giant cargo plane flies in for the first time
29.12.11
The plane being hailed as the next generation for cargo flights touched down at Prestwick Airport for the first time this week, the Ayrshire Post reports. The massive Cargolux Boeing 747-800F cargo plane flew in en-route to Luxembourg.
Cargolux uses Prestwick regularly and the 747-800F will become a frequent visitor on its scheduled cargo services around the world. It flew in from Houston, Texas, stopping off at Prestwick to unload aircraft and aerospace parts and to load oil and gas equipment.
The 747-800F is more fuel efficient than its predecessor, the Boeing 747-400F, with many benefits coming from the GEnx engines, which will be serviced for the airline at the GE Caledonian facility next to Prestwick Airport. It features improved payload, range, environmental compliance, noise reduction and fuel efficiency. With a range of 8275 kilometres and a payload capacity of 140 tonnes, it is the most efficient aircraft in its class.
