Minister backs terror flights call
28.02.06
Scottish Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson is supporting a call to ensure that 'CIA torture flights' do not use Scotland's airports.
The Scottish Executive has rejected demands to become involved, claiming the use of Scotland's airports for so-called rendition flights was a matter for the police. The police have refused to intervene claiming they have never received any credible information that airports including Glasgow Prestwick, Wick and Inverness have been used by the United States to take terrorist suspects to countries for interrogation which use torture.
But yesterday the Scottish Labour conference passed a motion calling on the executive to uphold Scottish and international law 'by doing all in its power to ensure that no Scottish airports are used for flights which are delivering detainees into torture or illegal detention'.
Responding to the debate, Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson said they were all on the same side. She said: 'We have made it very clear that along with our Westminster colleagues, we will co-operate with various inquiries that are being undertaken.'
