Glasgow Prestwick Airport handled 180,978 passengers in March, up 7% on the same month last year and an 18% improvement on February's passenger total. The airport also enjoyed growth in freight and opened a new long term car park during the month.
During the month of March, most scheduled destinations from Glagow Prestwick showed year on year growth in load factors (the number of full seats per plane), with southern European routes performing particularly well. Freight also continued to improve, with 3,092 tonnes handled last month, up 35% on a year earlier and the strongest monthly performance since October 2005.
The airport handled a total of 2,401,305 passengers in the year to the end of March 2007 - a 1% increase on 2006. The freight total during the 12 months was 30,513 tonnes, a year on year rise of 8%.
In March a new 1500 space economy long stay airport car park opened for business. This new car park will compete with low-cost off-site car parks by offering a lowest price guarantee with a high quality product and service, a spokesman said.
In addition a new Elvis Presley theme bar (the airport is the only place The King set foot in the UK), part of SSP's £1 million programme of food and beverage improvements at Prestwick, opened during the month in the departures lounge.
