Ryanair blamed for fall in passenger numbers
19.12.06
Passenger numbers at Prestwick Airport dropped in November, because of a fall in capacity at low-cost airline Ryanair, according to an airport spokesman. Passengers fell to 161,101 from 166,745 for the same month last year, a fall of 3.3%
Ryanair operates five Boeing 737 planes out of Prestwick Airport, serving more than 20 destinations in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Ireland and Scandinavia. It accounts for around 70% of the airports capacity.
A spokesman for the airport said the slight drop in passengers was a result of route restructuring by Ryanair, which reduced its capacity by 8000 seats a month after cutting the frequency of flights on some of its main routes.
A Ryanair spokeswoman added: 'We carried fewer passengers at Glasgow Prestwick this November than last. However, this month we have launched two new routes and we are currently in talks with the airport about further expansion.'
Yesterday, the airline introduced a new three times-a-week service to Grenoble in France. It follows the launch of other new services in recent weeks to Riga and the City of Derry airport.
