Extra police at Prestwick Airport during Olympics

Anti-terror police will maintain a constant presence at Prestwick Airport during the London 2012 Olympics, the Daily Record reports. Any aircraft thought to be under threat will be diverted to the airport, because its proximity to the sea means planes need not fly in over highly populated areas.
Prestwick is already the designated airport for at-risk flights approaching the UK from the west, with Stansted normally dealing with flights from the east. However, during the Olympics, the London airport's role will be suspended because anti-terror chiefs fear it would pose too much of a risk as it is so far inland and too close to the Olympic site. A second airport in the north of England will be delegated as an emergency airport in its place.
The newspaper reports that added security at Prestwick Airport will add hundreds of thousands of pounds to the £1.2m bill for hosting Olympic football matches in Glasgow. Strathclyde Police have said that it will not be feasible for anti-terror officers to scramble to reach Prestwick in the face of a threat. They say the only solution is to have the airport manned throughout the games.
