Passengers using Glasgow Prestwick airport increased by 10% last month. Its annual passenger number soared towards 2.4 million, as it continues to catch Scotland's big 3 airports.
Glasgow Prestwick, Scotland's fourth largest airport, handled 222,278 travellers in October, with its year-on-year total up by 11% to 2,389,178. The Ayrshire airport is growing faster than Aberdeen, the most rapidly expanding of the top 3 airports and the airport Prestwick is chasing for third place. Aberdeen is currently growing at an annualised 8.4%, with 2.8 million annual passengers.
Infratil, Glasgow Prestwick airport's owners, said yesterday that additional passengers from its latest new route, to Krakow, would be offset by reduced winter frequencies on some of Ryanair's other routes to Germany and Scandinavia.
Infratil also reported freight volumes were down by 22% last month at Prestwick compared with a year ago, partly because of industrial action by pilots at freight carrier Polar, which has since been resolved.
