Passengers down but freight up in December
18.01.07
Freight volumes at Prestwick Airport were up more than 10% in December, but passenger numbers fell by 3.8 percent.
The airport handled a total of 160,832 passengers in December against 167,110 in 2005. The fall was a result of reduced capacity on a number of Ryanair routes during the winter. A new 3 times weekly service to Grenoble began operating during the month, replacing the Marseille route during the winter and giving Ryanair some seasonal ski traffic.
December was a strong month for freight, however, with 2,481 tonnes handled. The 10.5% year on year increase is 'in-keeping with recent improvements in freight throughput,' a spokesman for owners Infratil said.
