Airport warns of more job losses

More jobs are to be lost at Prestwick Airport because of a major drop in passengers expected this winter. Staff have been yold of ‘likely’ cuts when a 90-day consultation period begins on August 16. A spokesman for the airport said it was examining ways to reduce costs and this is expected to lead to redundancies. The airport axed 120 jobs last year as a result of the economic downturn.
Ryanair announced last month that it will cut its winter schedule from the airport. It plans to axe almost a third of its seating capacity and slash the number of routes out of Prestwick from 24 to 16. Staff have been told the job cuts are a result of the Ryanair decision, as well as the continuing economic downturn.
The airport's chief executive, Iain Cochrane, said: ‘The combination of the economic downturn, a general decline in UK aviation activity, Scots holidaying at home, the Government's Air Passenger Duty increase and Ryanair cutting winter capacity this year by 52% compared to this summer, will have a significant impact on our business.'
