Prestwick Airport handled 3% fewer passengers last month compared to a year earlier, with the increased Air Passenger Duty (APD) hitting demand for flights. However, freight at the Scottish airport was up 19%.
Glasgow Prestwick handled 203,018 passengers in April 2007 against 208,554 in 2006, a year on year decrease of 3%. Passenger numbers at local rival Glasgow Airport also fell during the month, with the February increase in APD hitting demand on UK domestic routes. Freight volume was up 19% compared to April 2006, with 2,861 tonnes handled during the month.
There was a UK first for the airport during the month, when a Boeing Dreamlifter aircraft, a heavily modified 747 freighter used to carry large parts for the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner around the world, stopped to refuel.
The airport also continued its food and beverage improvement programme, with the opening of a Yates's bar landside and a new food outlet in the departure lounge. The floorspace for the Starbucks coffee outlet has expanded landside and work continues to complete kitchen changes and an expanded Peckham's store.
