teenager runs across airport runway
13.07.09
A drunk teenager was in court after he scaled a 9 foot fence then raced across the runway at Prestwick Airport - thinking it was a short cut to catch a cab, the Sunday Mail reports. Michael Elder, 17, thought he was heading for a taxi rank through the yard of a DIY store after a boozy party. Instead he caused a major security alert after getting on to the runway of Prestwick Airport.
Mr Elder's lawyer Tony Currie said: ‘My client hadn't a clue where he was and in fact he told me he thought he was in the yard of B&Q - which is about a mile and a half away. The fence is 9 feet high with barbed wire so how he got over it is a mystery. He was caught on CCTV as he approached the runway, and was tackled by security staff, who handed him over to the police.'
Mr Elder admitted trespassing. Sheriff Colin Miller asked if he had been drinking and his lawyer said: ‘Very much so.’ Sheriff Miller branded his behaviour as ‘daft boy syndrome’. He deferred sentence on Elder for 3 months for good behaviour.
