Airport to cut 100 - 120 jobs
13.02.09
Up to 120 jobs - or around a quarter of the workforce - are to go at Prestwick Airport as a result of the loss of passenger and cargo flights during the current economic downturn. Staff were informed of the redundancies at a meeting this afternoon, following a consultation with unions.
Management at the airport said last month that it was running at a loss and announced a business review. The airport said the job losses are a result of a major decline in aviation activity throughout Europe.
Prestwick chief executive Mark Rodwell said: ‘Our summer schedules are still to be finalised but at this stage we believe there will be no growth for the remainder of 2009. The business review has led to a number of useful cost-saving initiatives, however it is clear these will not be sufficient to offset the revenue losses we are experiencing with the decline in aviation activity.'
‘To ensure we remain competitive going forward, unfortunately redundancies are necessary. At this stage we anticipate the number of employees will fall by between 100 and 120. Measures have been put in place to offer help and support during what is undoubtedly a difficult time.’ The cuts amount to more than a quarter of the airport's current workforce of 452.
