CEO of Glasgow Prestwick cast doubt on airport rail links
09.01.06
In an interview in the Glasgow Herald Steve Fitzgerald, CEO of Glasgow Prestwick Airport cast doubt over the financial viability of the planned Glasgow and Edinburgh airport rail links.
Fitzgerald, who was formerly boss at Sydney Airport, said: 'There is no reason to think a rail link is a magic bullet. It was a financial disaster in Sydney, where they spent hundreds of millions of dollars and passenger numbers only reached 10% of predictions.'
'That has great implications for Scotland, where the case for rail links to Glasgow and Edinburgh is grossly overstated. I just don't see how you get a return on a £100m investment like that. The reality is that most people will still want to jump in their cars or take a cab.'
