Passengers down almost 20%
07.09.11
Prestwick Airport reported a drop of almost 20% in passengers in July compared with the same month last year. There were 37,800 fewer passengers in the first month of the school holidays, as passenger numbers fell from 194,500 last year to 156,700 this year.
The airport said the declining passengers were caused by Ryanair reducing its routes. The budget airline is dominant at Prestwick and has shifted several routes to Edinburgh Airport, resulting in a 23% drop in scheduled aircraft movements. Freight tonnage was also down, by 11%.
