Passengers down 11%

Prestwick Airport had an 11% annual fall in passengers in the year to the end of March. Infratil, the owner of the Scottish airport, blamed the drop on Ryanair’s reduction of UK domestic and Irish routes and services. In the year to the end of March, the budget airline cut back its services from Prestwick to both Stansted and Belfast City airports, and withdrew a number of routes completely including to Charleroi, Torp, Gothenburg, Shannon, Milan and Budapest.
Passenger numbers tumbled to 1.52 million in the 12-month period, compared with 1.71 million, an 11% decline. A spokesman for the airport said: ‘Our strong summer 2010 performance was offset by a weak winter 2010 / 11 schedule.’ He added that the airport remains confident about its future, and that freight figures for March showed the seventh consecutive month of year-on-year growth, with freight tonnage up 32% for the month and 5% for the year.
