Airport no longer has dedicated armed police presence
03.05.10
Armed anti-terror police have been withdrawn from Prestwick Airport as part of a number of cost cutting measures, the Daily Record reports. A team of officers was based permanently at the airport following the Glasgow Airport terrorist attack in 2007. But the airport - who pay Strathclyde Police for the cover - decided to ax the unit as part of a package of efficiency savings imposed to reflect its falling passenger numbers. It will rely instead on ‘roaming’ mobile firearm patrols that operate across the Strathclyde force area.
An airport spokesman told the newspaper: ‘The airport and Strathclyde Police have worked to produce a policing plan that reflects the levels of activity at the airport and the associated risks. Strathclyde Police officers, including armed officers, are working extremely closely on a daily basis with airport security and safety staff.'
