Scottish Secretary reported to have stopped US planes using Prestwick
02.08.06
Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander is reported to have intervened to prevent two American planes carrying weapons to Israel from using Prestwick Airport for refuelling. Two US flights which were due to land at Prestwick at the weekend were diverted to RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, which is shared with the US air force.
Reports say the move followed protests by Alexander, who feared the political fall-out from Scotland being used as a staging post for US bombs en route to arm Israel for its assault on Lebanon. He is reported to have told Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett it would 'play very badly' in Scotland if the flights were allowed to stop at Prestwick.
