Now airport bosses issue kettles warning
02.01.10
The airport bosses who banned toasters because they kept setting off fire alarms have issued a new warning - over kettles - the Daily Record reports. The terminal building had to be evacuated 4 times in a month this year because staff kept burning toast, triggering fire alarms. Now, workers have been warned to make sure kettles are away from fire alarms in case the steam sets them off too.
Airport bosses are said to fear they will be fined by the fire service if they continue to make false alarm calls. In a letter issued to staff, they warned: ‘We have had 5 fire alarm activations so far this year caused by burnt toast. Boiling kettles generate steam and staff are to review where the kettles are situated to ensure they are not placed directly below a heat detector.
Prestwick Airport said a review of electrical appliances had been carried out after the false fire alarms. A spokesman told the newspaper: ‘When we banned toasters, we also carried a review of the use and placement of all electrical appliances in kitchen areas, to ensure that triggering of heat and smoke sensors for non-alarm conditions would be eliminated.’
