Politicians defend subsidised rail fares
01.01.10
Ayrshire politicians have defended the subsidised rail fares to Prestwick Airport, the Ayrshire Post reports, after 'an outburst' by Glasgow Airport bosses, who branded the scheme ‘unfair and anti-competitive’. Discounted fares to and from Prestwick Airport are publicly subsidised via ScotRail and are credited with helping attract airlines such as Ryanair to Ayrshire.
Ayr MSP John Scott defended the scheme, insisting that the support for Prestwick Airport is essential. He said: ‘The arrangement that supports rail services to and from the Prestwick Airport railway station has been in place for many years. It contributes very significantly to the airport and therefore to the economy of southern Ayrshire as a whole.’
‘While it is regrettable that the proposed Glasgow Airport rail link was cancelled by the Scottish Government, that is no reason for managers at Glasgow Airport to try to pull the rug out from under Prestwick’s arrangement.’
His view was echoed by leader of South Ayrshire Council, Hugh Hunter, who told the newspaper: ‘The income and industry generated by Prestwick Airport is crucial to our local economy. I believe that the long standing initiative of discounted rail fares to the airport is a great example of the type of innovative thinking that should be encouraged.'
‘Prestwick Airport is very successful and, particularly in the current economic climate, we have to support every initiative designed to make it more attractive and successful. In addition, it is important that we encourage people to use public transport, as it is less harmful to the environment.’
